Mendeli’s guide to Tel Aviv pearls
When cities hide special spots not evident for those who pass by in a hurry, either some insight is needed or lots of time to wander and discover is needed. In case you don’t have all that time, your favorite boutique hotel in Tel Aviv, Mendeli Street hotel, has put together a little guide to the pearls of the city:
Neve Tzedek, the neighborhood founded by wealthy Jewish families that came from North Africa, was nicknamed “little Paris” because of its surprising architectural innovations. In the early 20th century it was home to many famous writers and artists, including the Nobel Prize laureate writer S.Y. Agnon. And that is the ultimate spot for a romantic time. A suggestion: sit in a cozy café and browse the boutiques and designers’ shops.
For time travelers
Arriving to Jaffa is like going through a time tunnel – skyscrapers soar on the left, while ahead lays a city with thousands of years of history.
The main port of the ancient land of Israel, and one of the first ports in the world, Jaffa was a center of commerce and culture, agriculture and tourism, the destination of shipping lines from Alexandria and Beirut. From the Clock Tower Square, convoys of wagons and camels fanned out to all parts of the land, and pilgrims made their way on foot to the holy city of Jerusalem.
And today, in the alley next to the Mahmuddiyah mosque, men are still absorbed in endless games of backgammon, or shesh-besh, and coffeehouses offer narghilas to smoke along with black Turkish coffee. Welcome to Jaffa!
For plant lovers
Tel Aviv University’s Botanical Garden hosts around 3,800 plant species from Israel and around the world. A must-see is the Sarah Racine Root Laboratory, the largest aeroponic (<-what is this??) root lab in the world and the only place you can see the deepest tree roots. The garden is open from Sunday to Thursday from 8 am to 4 pm and is free of charge.
